7-year-old girl killed in SUV rollover

Franklin County Sheriff’s officers were today continuing to investigate the death of an Overbrook girl who died in a rollover accident Monday night on a rural road near Pomona.

Maddison Gray, 7, rural Overbrook, the daughter of Clarence Gray, 51, Ottawa, and Lisa Reese, Overbrook, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Monday one-half mile south of Pomona on Colorado Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers said the girl was a passenger in the rear center seat of a 1995 Toyota SUV driven by her father, who was traveling south on Colorado Road when the SUV left the west side of the road and struck a bridge rail.

The SUV rolled onto its top and then back onto its wheels before coming to rest just south of the small bridge, officers said.

Clarence Gray and two other unidentified passengers, a 9-year-old boy, who was in the front seat, and a 6-year-old girl who was in the rear driver’s side seat, were taken to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, where they were treated for minor injuries, officers said.

The sheriff’s office says the driver was not wearing a seat belt and it has not yet been determined if the passengers were wearing belts. Officers said it did not appear that alcohol was involved in the accident.

As part of the investigation, Maddison Gray was taken to Frontier Forensics in Topeka for an autopsy by Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home of Ottawa, officers said.
