Investigators can’t find cause of fire that killed five

? Investigators said they may never know what caused an Oct. 16 house fire that killed five members of an Olathe family.

Olathe Fire Department officials said Friday that test results on electrical equipment in the home couldn’t determine what sparked the blaze and the cause will be officially listed as undetermined.

The blaze killed Matthew and Rebecca Orr, both 46, as well as three of their children, Benjamin, 18; Jeremiah, 16; and Kyle, 14.

Investigators said the house had three smoke alarms but two of them didn’t work properly the night of the fire.

The two surviving family members, one of whom was in the house at the time and escaped the fire, declined to comment on Friday’s announcement but released a statement thanking the community for the outpouring of support they’ve received.

“It is encouraging to know that a community such as this can come together for people they hardly know and be so caring,” Kameron Orr, 20, and her brother, Justin, 24, wrote.

Family spokesman Ken Ross said the two were not angered by the test results and thanked firefighters for their investigation.

“Their healing process will just move forward, regardless of what the cause of the fire was,” Ross said. “They weren’t sitting around waiting to see what the cause was.”

Ross said the two still live together and are in college. Justin recently married.

“They’re healthy, they’re happy; they’re moving on with their lives,” Ross said.

Justin Orr heard a smoke alarm and escaped out through a basement window. The thick smoke and fire prevented Justin from alerting the rest of his family. Kameron Orr, a Kansas University student, was in Lawrence the night of the fire.

The two are rebuilding the family home but plan to sell it and split the money once the structure is complete, Ross said.

“They just said, ‘We couldn’t live there anymore,”‘ Ross said.
