KU freshman killed in turnpike accident

Three other KU students critically injured in accident

A Kansas University student was killed and three other students were seriously or critically injured in an accident Wednesday on the Kansas Turnpike between El Dorado and Wichita.

Stephanie L. Hoyt, a 19-year-old freshman from Kansas City, Kan., was the driver of a Ford Focus that attempted to make a U-Turn on the Turnpike but was broadsided by a semi truck.

Hoyt was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 5 a.m.

Three other passengers in the car, also 19-year-old students from Kansas City, Kan., and graduates of Sumner Academy, were injured in the accident. The students, who were transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, were:

¢ Genevie Gold, who was in serious condition this morning.

¢ Sharon Wright, who was in critical condition.

¢ Rachel Kannaday, who was in serious condition.

According to an accident report, Hoyt was wearing her seat belt. Wright and Kannaday were not wearing their seat belts. It was not known whether Gold was wearing hers.
