Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Wednesday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

Some legislators and prosecutors worried legislators are moving too quickly in resurrecting the state’s death penalty law before the U.S. Supreme Court considers a Kansas court ruling striking the law down.

Also:

— The Kansas chapter of the anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity promoted amending the Kansas Constitution to limit state spending and require voters’ approval of tax increases.

— The House Utilities Committee introduced a bill to require state agencies to obtain at least 2.5 percent of their electricity from renewable sources starting in 2007.

— For more than two hours, the Senate debated rules for governing its operations for the next four years. On a 21-19 vote, the chamber adopted a policy of allowing unlimited roll-call votes when debating amendments to bills.

Clock is ticking:

Wednesday was the third calendar day of the session, out of 90 scheduled.
