Principal to be disciplined after camera found

? The principal of a Wichita high school faces disciplinary action after a video surveillance camera intended to nab graffiti writers was found in the entry area of a boys’ bathroom.

District spokeswoman Susan Arensman said Thursday that East High School Principal Kenneth Thiessen made a bad judgment call by placing the camera in an area of the bathroom separated by a door from the bathroom’s interior. She said district policy banned cameras in school bathrooms.

Arensman said Supt. Winston Brooks would decide what action would be taken against Thiessen.

Fifteen-year-old Charles Rogers was suspended Tuesday after he discovered the camera and took it home. His mother, Melinda Rogers, said her son thought the camera wasn’t supposed to be in the bathroom.

“He figured it was some perverted maintenance guy,” she said.

She said her son could return to school Monday.
