House members homeless for session

? Call them the Siberian 70.

Due to the Capitol renovation project, 70 House members have been moved out of the west wing and will have offices in the Docking state office building during the legislative session that starts Jan. 9.

Legislative leaders expressed concern Wednesday over having the lawmakers tromp back and forth the approximately one block during the colder months of the session.

An old, underground tunnel connecting the Capitol and Docking building is unavailable for use because of other construction related to the Capitol expansion, officials said.

House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, said he believed many of the 35 Republicans and 35 Democrats would end up staying in the House chamber to do their office work.

Meanwhile, work on the east wing of the Capitol is scheduled to be completed next month, which will allow senators to return to renovated offices and the Senate chamber.
