— An 11-year-old boy was charged with forcing a teenager and two young children out of a car, taking it and driving it to a grade school the next morning.

The boy, from Kansas City, Kan., was charged Friday in Wyandotte County's juvenile court with one count of aggravated robbery.

Dist. Atty. Jerome Gorman, a prosecutor for 24 years, said the boy was one of the youngest defendants he had ever seen in such a serious criminal case.

"This is very unusual," Gorman said.

The car was reported stolen late Wednesday night at a convenience store. The boy was arrested the next morning, when staff members at the Wyandotte Academy reported seeing him driving to the school.

According to police reports, a Kansas City, Kan., woman said she left her 14-year-old son, 6-year-old grandson and 2-year-old granddaughter in the car while she went into the convenience store. Police believe she left her keys in the car when the suspect forced the others out and took it. No one was hurt.

Gorman said the boy threatened the woman's son and grandchildren, telling them he had a handgun, but it was not clear if he was bluffing.

A detention hearing for the boy was scheduled for Monday..
