Woman sentenced for falsifying grades

? A woman who admitted she falsified grades as a community college secretary has been sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Dawn Kortz, 31, said she gave credit to seven Dodge City Community College football players for coursework they didn’t complete, though prosecutors said the fraud went deeper.

Ford County District Court Judge Leigh Hood sentenced her Friday to the probation and eight-month suspended jail terms on each of two charges she entered a plea agreement on: forgery and making false information. They are to be served concurrently.

Kortz, who now lives in Hendersonville, Tenn., worked for the college from 2001 to 2004. School officials say they linked her to 18 instances of grade falsification. Kortz has said she didn’t change grades for money, but to win approval from those she helped.

The woman’s attorney, Linda Eckelman, was not so placid. She said her client was being a made a scapegoat and that other improprieties at the school had been ignored.

Glenn Kerbs, an attorney for the school, rejected the allegations.
