— A longtime college music professor has been arraigned in the killing of his former lover.

An attorney for David L. Stagg entered a not guilty plea on his behalf during the hearing Thursday in Johnson County District Court. Stagg, 57, a professor at Central Missouri State University, faces a charge of premeditated first-degree murder in the April 2004 strangulation death of 51-year-old William J. Jennings.

Prosecutors said Jennings and Stagg had a romantic relationship and described the case as a domestic violence homicide.
