Wyatt Earp statue to be unveiled

? With one hand gripping his western hat and the other fastened to his long-barrel revolver, Wyatt Earp is set to return to the town where he established law and order more than a century ago.

A bronze sculpture of Dodge City’s most famous lawman is hiding out in southwest Kansas at an undisclosed location, awaiting a Nov. 12 unveiling on the street that bears his name.

The eight-foot tribute to Earp was created by Oklahoma artist Mary Spurgeon and will stand near the city’s recently constructed Trail of Fame walking trail.

The statue isn’t paid for yet, so members of the Trail of Fame committee say they’ll sell 14-inch bronze replicas and use the proceeds to finance the 500-pound version.

The statue comes in time for next year’s 50th anniversary of “Gunsmoke,” the long-running television show that revisited Dodge City’s wild-west roots. Plans are in the works to follow Earp’s statue with one of fellow lawman Bat Masterson.
