Mother convicted of murdering 3-year-old

? A woman faces a possible life sentence for the first-degree murder of her 3-year-old son, who had angered her by drinking orange juice she was saving for the toddler’s two young cousins.

Rosa Sanchez, 35, collapsed in tears Thursday after a Sedgwick County jury convicted her on the murder charge as well as aggravated battery and child abuse. Sedgwick County District Judge Rebecca Pilshaw set sentencing for Oct. 21.

Jurors heard two days of testimony about the Jan. 8 death of Brayan Sanchez at his family’s Wichita home. An autopsy showed 170 bruises, scrapes and cuts, some of which appeared to be older, on the boy’s body.

Sanchez, described by relatives as patient and gentle with children, has maintained her innocence since police first questioned her. She said she had gone to pick up her daughter at school and came home to find Brayan complaining of stomach pain.

“This tiny wisp of a woman did not have the physical strength to inflict these kinds of injuries,” defense attorney Sara McKinnon said in her closing argument. “Even saying the words out loud — Rosa Sanchez beat her child to death for drinking juice — it’s ridiculous.”

But two of Sanchez’s other sons, ages 17 and 5, testified that their mother became enraged when she learned that Brayan had drunk some orange juice Sanchez had planned to give to the two toddlers she was baby-sitting. Sanchez’s husband was at work at the time.

The brothers said Sanchez first scolded Brayan, then took him into a bedroom. They said Brayan’s screams could be heard through a closed door and that their mother emerged about 10 minutes later without a word.

Wichita Police Detective Jose Salcido, who interviewed Sanchez on Jan. 8, testified that she said Brayan’s injuries came from falling down while on a bike or slide or while dancing.
