Sheriff says train-death investigation continues

? More than two months after an Argonia teenager was hit by a train, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said it was “actively pursuing” its investigation.

The July 5 death of Jacob “Jake” Allen has haunted this rural Kansas community since media reports surfaced that the 19-year-old had been tied to the tracks with baling wire.

Allen graduated as Argonia High School valedictorian in May.

Sumner County Sheriff Gerald Gilkey has refused to release details of the incident.

In a statement Wednesday, the department said it had interviewed 104 people, executed two search warrants and followed up on 49 tips. It said it also conducted four polygraphs on people rumored to be suspects in the case.

“Findings of those polygraphs and the investigation into these subjects have given no indication that they were involved with this incident,” the department said.

The department said it had received help from numerous agencies, including the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Behavior Science Unit.
