Bus crash injures six

A school bus was struck by a tractor-trailer Thursday afternoon while crossing a highway in Reno County, injuring the bus driver and all five students aboard, authorities said.

The accident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m., about seven miles south of Hutchinson, as the Haven School District bus pulled across the westbound lanes of Kansas Highway 96, Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said.

Four people on the bus were taken to Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita and two were taken to Hutchinson Hospital, the sheriff said. Their names and ages and the extent of their injuries could not immediately be learned.

The truck’s driver and passenger sustained what Henderson called minor injuries as they tried to get into the bus to help those inside.
