Fleeing motorist causes fatal crash, officers say
Wichita -- A motorist who took off during a traffic stop caused a fatal crash early Thursday southwest of Wichita, authorities said.
Lt. Mike Oliver, of the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department, said an officer stopped a car for a traffic infraction around 2 a.m. As the officer began talking to the motorist, the driver sped off.
Oliver said the officer followed the motorist but didn't keep pace with the car because it was too dangerous.
However, the motorist kept going, running a red light and smashing into a car, Oliver said.
The Kansas State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Vicki Brown, 55, of Haysville.
After the crash, Oliver said the driver fled on foot and made his way into a mobile home. A person in the home called 911 and told police that a suspicious, unarmed man was inside.
Authorities then came to the home and arrested the man, Oliver said.
Fort Riley soldier won't fight extradition
Manhattan -- A Fort Riley soldier and another man won't fight extradition to Chicago to face charges in the death of a clothing store manager.
Spc. Pierre M. Cole, 22, and Lee McGee, 37, of Chicago, agreed to return to Illinois during a hearing Wednesday in Riley County District Court.
The men and two others are charged in connection with shooting of 53-year-old James Jung during an Oct. 14 robbery.
During an Oct. 25 hearing, Cole and McGee had refused to waive extradition.
Cole is one of seven Fort Riley soldiers facing murder charges. Two soldiers have been charged in the September shooting deaths of two fellow soldiers at a home near Clay Center. And four soldiers have been charged in Iraq in two separate cases involving the deaths of Iraq civilians.
