New Serologicals division oversees Lawrence plant

Serologicals Corp.’s newest division is being groomed for rapid revenue growth, and a Lawrence plant is poised to play a leading role.

Atlanta-based Serologicals said Monday it had formed Celliance, a division to oversee contract research services and handle Serologicals’ own research, development, manufacturing and commercialization of cell culture supplements and diagnostic products.

The move gives Celliance control of more than 300 employees in six locations, including at the company’s Ex-Cyte plant in the East Hills Business Park.

“The creation of the Celliance division results from a recognition of the critical importance of our bioprocessing products and services to the ongoing growth and development of the company,” said David A. Dodd, president and chief executive officer of Serologicals. “This will allow us to focus our resources and to be a better and more successful business partner with our customers, while confirming our long-term commitment to this business area.”

The company’s $28 million plant at East Hills already is home to 20 employees working on production of Ex-Cyte, a liquid that is derived from serum drawn from slaughtered cattle, then transformed into material used to help speed the growth of cells for use in researching and creating drugs.

Celliance’s other operations are in Kankakee, Ill.; Toronto; Milford, Mass.; Morgan Hill, Calif.; and Livingston, Scotland.

The division will pump $120 million of revenue into Serologicals this year, said David L. Bellitt, who was named Celliance president Monday. He will continue as a corporate vice president of Serologicals, where he has worked for two years.
