Girlfriend’s son charged in shooting

? The eldest son of a woman whose boyfriend was found dead in the couple’s house has been charged with murder.

Bryan A. Davenport, 24, was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Curtis R. McDaniel, 45.

Davenport’s mother found McDaniel’s body after returning home from work on Monday morning. She called police after finding that her two younger sons, aged 10 and 12, were missing. An Amber Alert was issued and then canceled when Davenport voluntarily came to the police station with the boys.

According to court records, Davenport went to his mother’s Kansas City town house Monday morning to pick up his brothers and take them to school. The documents allege that Davenport shot McDaniel while he was in the house, but it is unclear whether the boys witnessed it. Davenport then left, taking the boys with him instead of to school.

Davenport has denied shooting McDaniel.

Police believe Davenport might have been angry about McDaniel’s treatment of his mother, who had argued with McDaniel the night before.

McDaniel was accused of killing a girlfriend in 2001 in Kansas City. Charges were dropped in September 2003, but Jackson County prosecutors said they had intended to refile them. The body of Dina Braden, 39, was found near Swopes Park in September 2001.
