Divers find body of missing teen rafter

? Divers on Monday found the body of a teenager who disappeared last weekend when the rubber raft in which he and a friend were riding capsized on a treacherous stretch of the rain-swollen Smoky Hill River.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, and his surviving friend, 18-year-old Raymond Jones, put the raft in the river before daybreak Saturday at a bridge near the south end of town. The raft overturned downstream as it went over the first of two small concrete dams with drop-offs of several feet each.

Jones was swept about 200 feet in the current until he was able to grab onto a logjam before the second dam. He climbed on top of it. When he was rescued several hours later, he told authorities that his friend was missing.

“They are a couple young men and it was an adventure I’m sure,” said Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski. “It turned sad in a hurry.”

Authorities on Saturday shut down a dam about 30 miles upstream in Kanopolis. By Monday, water in the river had dropped several feet and rescuers thought they saw clothing in the water about 25 or 30 yards from where Jones was found. Divers found the body Monday afternoon in that spot, Kochanowski said.

He said the discovery was a “tremendous relief” to the missing teen’s family.

Jones remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition at Salina Regional Health Center.
