Officials recommend selling aging Landon state office building
Topeka ? State officials today recommended selling the Landon Building and rebuilding the Docking Building.
The state’s two major office buildings located adjacent to the Capitol are in deep disrepair, Secretary of Administration Howard Fricke told members of the House-Senate State Building Construction Committee.
The historic Landon Building — once the headquarters for the Santa Fe Railroad — “has outlived its useful life as an office building,” Fricke said.
The approximately 50-year-old Docking Building is in bad shape too, he said, and needs to be torn down to its cement columns and floors and rebuilt.
Fricke said because the basement of Docking contains the power plant for the Capitol and other nearby state buildings, it would be too expensive to relocate the entire building.
The building committee gave Fricke permission to analyze plans and costs to get rid of Landon and rebuild Docking. The committee said it wanted a plan of action by the 2005 legislative session that meets in January to propose to the entire Legislature.
