Kansas driver shot after police chase in Arizona

Flagstaff, Ariz. — A Kansas man allegedly driving a stolen truck was shot and wounded by police after hitting vehicles to avoid being captured.

Richard Delray Maze, 45, was in intensive care Wednesday night after undergoing surgery at Flagstaff Medical Center, authorities said.

Police were alerted that Maze was in northern Arizona after he called his girlfriend in Kansas Tuesday night.

Officers said they spotted Maze on Wednesday driving a truck that was reported stolen July 8 in Great Bend, Kan.

A police chase ensued and officers fired after Maze’s vehicle avoided a roadblock and hit two cars, police said.

Kansas authorities said Maze had been in prison for robbery, and his criminal convictions date back to 1976 and include burglary, theft and aggravated robbery.

“He has a very long, torrid history of criminal activity in the state of Kansas,” said Detective Denton Doze of the Great Bend Police Department. “And he had made some comments to his girlfriend that he wasn’t going back to prison.”

Teen pleads no contest in street fighting death

North Platte, Neb. — A Kansas man pleaded no contest to manslaughter charges in the death of a North Platte man last September.

Charlie McIntyre, 19, is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 17 after entering his plea Monday in Lincoln County District Court.

McIntyre was charged in the death of Brian Dixon, 20, who died Sept. 1 after a street fight.

McIntyre was accused by authorities of hitting Dixon with a crowbar.

A charge of use of a weapon to commit a felony was dropped in exchange for the manslaughter plea.

Lincoln County Atty. Jeff Meyer also dropped a charge of aiding and abetting second-degree assault against Ryan Shannon, 18, of Ellsworth, Kan. Shannon is no longer charged in the case because it became clear that McIntyre alone killed Dixon, Meyer said.

McIntyre could face up to 20 years in prison on the manslaughter charge.
