Topeka About 50 classified employees from regents universities patrolled the Capitol today, talking to legislators about pay and other work issues.
Rodney Smith, a facilities specialist at Kansas University, said the group wanted to remind lawmakers about the work they do and the lack of significant pay increases over the past several years. "I think we've just been forgotten," he said.
Dennis Constance, a custodial supervisor at KU, said he would like lawmakers to set up a system to study how much state employee pay has slipped over the past few years in relation to the cost of living, including the increasing cost of health insurance.
"This is a process of asking for what we want, and hopefully getting something acceptable," he said.
Last year, state employees received a 1.5 percent payraise. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has proposed a three percent pay hike for the next fiscal year.
