NASCAR’s Stewart visits Statehouse

? NASCAR driver Tony Stewart visited the Statehouse on Wednesday, trading souvenirs with the governor and donating autographed models of his No. 20 Chevrolet for a legislative charity auction.

Stewart, an Indiana native and the 2002 Nextel Cup champion, said the 3-year-old Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County has contributed to the growth of NASCAR and helped increase support for smaller tracks across the state.

“The fans here in this state are unbelievable,” Stewart said.

Currently seventh in the Nextel Cup points standings, Stewart races Sunday in California, where he finished 41st last year after blowing an engine. He finished fourth last October in the Banquet 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Legislators and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius issued proclamations praising Stewart for his charitable work and driving accomplishments. Sebelius presented him a Kansas flag that had flown over the Statehouse, and he gave her an autographed shirt.

The autographed model cars were to be auctioned Wednesday night at an annual legislative dinner that raises funds for Special Olympics.
