Friends attend funeral services for victims

? A man whose family died when a flood swept their minivan off the Kansas Turnpike sang two love songs to his wife Saturday at the funeral for her and the couple’s four children.

Melissa Rogers, 33, and her four children, Makenah, 8, Zachary, 5, Nicholas, 3, and Alenah, 21 months, were killed Aug. 30 when floodwaters swept their minivan off Interstate 35 south of Emporia. The family lived in Glenaire, a town surrounded by the city of Liberty.

Robert Rogers said he has no regrets because his family made it a priority to spend time together and express affection, funeral attendees told The Wichita Eagle. At Rogers’ request, reporters did not attend the service.

Melissa “had complete, unconditional love for her children,” said Kristin McIntyre, a longtime friend of the Rogers family from Fairfax, Va. “How many people can say they lived their lives without regret?”

Hundreds attended the funeral services at Northland Abundant Life Worship Center in Kansas City.

During the two-hour service, dozens of people took turns recalling Melissa and her children, said Joyce Estep, a church member from Missouri City.

“They must have had a lot of friends,” she said. “People talked about the children, and what they did together. That’s what counts in this world.”

Afterward, a dozen state troopers on motorcycles escorted a long caravan of mourners to Glenridge Memorial Gardens for the burial.

Pallbearers unloaded the caskets from separate vehicles and placed them side by side, next to five open graves.

Caskets containing the remains of the Rogers family are moved to five hearses after funeral services. The funeral was Saturday in Kansas City, Mo.
