Charges dropped against 4 officers
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ? A man who accused eight suburban Kansas City police officers of beating him during a traffic stop has dropped four of them from his federal lawsuit.
An attorney for Jared Alan Heller, 18, filed the notice of dismissal on Thursday. It withdraws civil complaints against Lenexa police officers Karl Burris, Steve Grigsby, Shannon Leeper and Scott Bryant.
Remaining as defendants are the city of Lenexa and officers Eric Tims, Ted Gardner, Scott Connell and David Lewis-Jones.
The lawsuit, filed last month in U.S. District Court, seeks more than $1 million in damages.
Heller’s attorney, Chris Sherman, declined to say why Burris, Grigsby, Leeper and Bryant were dropped as defendants.
David M. Cooper, Lenexa’s senior assistant city attorney, said the city provided information that convinced Heller and Sherman that the four officers should be dropped from the case. Cooper also said he still believed that the case against the city and the four other officers was without merit.
Police stopped Heller shortly before 1 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2002, for driving with switched tags, according to police reports. Police said they arrested Heller after he became combative.
Heller’s lawsuit alleges that officers kicked a leg out from under him, wrestled him to the ground and beat him. He says he suffered injuries to his head, eyes, face, arms, legs and body.
