J-W Staff Reports ? Visitors to the Schmeidlers’ place in rural Johnson County tend to overstay their welcome. But that’s OK with the owners — Ed and Bonnie — because it takes a lot of time to see everything in their “creatively cluttered” country home and gardens.
From the extensive artwork covering every inch of wall space to quirky collections of razors, clowns and rusty iron pieces, the home is a stimulating feast for the senses. Every piece and picture tells a story.
Ed Schmeidler is a lover of antiques, art and anything sentimental. His office and workshop feature chaotic, yet remarkably organized displays of memorabilia from his professional and personal life. Most notable is his enormous Gillette razor collection which cannot be contained in one room. Ed even has a large map showing the curious guest where each razor was procured.
Bonnie enjoys creating vignettes of plant life and items she’s found at garage and estate sales, or by the side of the road. She admits to always “tweaking” her living environment by arranging, then rearranging. A “flower bed” speaks to her tongue-in-cheek approach to decorating.
