Two candidates announce run for state Senate seat

? State Rep. Dale Swenson and Wichita lawyer Phil Journey announced Friday that they will run for a Kansas Senate seat being vacated by Nancey Harrington, of Goddard.

Harrington’s replacement will be selected by 89 Republican precinct committee members who live in the 26th Senate district, which includes much of western Sedgwick County.

Mark Kahrs, chairman of the Sedgwick County Republican Party, said he would schedule a meeting the first week of December to pick Harrington’s successor.

Harrington resigned, effective Dec. 6, because she is still trying to recover from injuries she suffered in a car accident in August 2002.

Journey, an advocate for gun owners’ rights, ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 1988 and lost a bid for Sedgwick County Commission in 2000. He opposes expanded gambling and tax increases, and said he wanted to hold schools more accountable.

Swenson has voted with conservatives on most social issues, including bills to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons and restrictions on late-term abortion.
