Military bill sends $100M to Kansas

? More than $100 million for construction at Fort Riley and other Kansas military facilities is included in a defense bill approved Wednesday by the U.S. Senate.

Among millions of dollars earmarked for Kansas projects overall, roughly $69 million of that is going to Fort Riley, Sen. Pat Roberts said.

That includes $40 million for a barracks complex at the base, $16 million for two housing projects and $13 million for the second phase of an urban warfare training center.

At Fort Leavenworth, $28 million was approved for the first phase of the Command and General Staff College’s new Lewis and Clark Instructional Facility.

Those projects are on top of funding for a hundred 767 tankers from Boeing, 20 to be leased and 80 to be purchased.

“This was a long hard road, but in the end, the Air Force and Boeing won a sweeping victory,” Roberts said.

The senator said the amount of funding approved for Kansas illustrated the importance of the state’s military bases.

“The Senate’s approval of these bills reinforces the critical roles Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth and McConnell Air Force Base play in our national defense,” he said.

“As the Army considers fielding its future forces, urban warfare training facilities like the Combined Arms Collective Training Facility at Fort Riley will be key.”

Other funding that will affect Kansas includes the award of $280.6 million for the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System for the Air Force. Raytheon Aircraft in Wichita manufactures the system’s aircraft.
