K.C.K. fire claims two more lives

? A house fire has claimed the lives of a second and third victim while two others remain in a Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

The fire trapped the five early Thursday in their home as neighbors and police tried to come to their aid.

Austin Bell, 9, died Thursday evening at Children’s Mercy Hospital, and the boy’s grandmother, Mary Rocha, 78, died Thursday night at a hospital in Columbia, Mo. Andrew Rocha, 2, died at KU Med about an hour after firefighters rescued him from the blaze.

Firefighters who rushed into the one-story, two-bedroom home in the Rosedale area of the city found the grandmother in the living room and the boys in the two bedrooms.

The two other children remained hospitalized Friday. David Bell, 8, was in critical condition at Children’s Mercy Hospital, and Joshua Rocha, 5, was in serious condition.

Investigators said an electric short from an overloaded extension cord in the living room caused the fire, which was reported just after midnight.

Neighbors tried to help, with some of them spraying the home with garden hoses in hopes of slowing the flames. Others had fire extinguishers.

Robert Horan said he was awakened by the sound of shattering glass and thought at first that neighborhood children were breaking beer bottles.

When he realized what was happening and ran across the street, he saw flames engulfing the small living room and starting to lick out the front door.

“I started yelling for the kids to come out of the house,” he said. “I just knew they were in there.”

Other neighbors and police were trying to get people out, but the flames and heavy smoke kept them from entering.

The first of 30 firefighters from three companies arrived at 12:11 a.m., and the fire was out by 12:35 a.m.

The mother of the four boys, Kristina Rocha, was at work.
