Rural airports receive federal grants

? Airports in Hutchinson and Hays will receive more than $1 million each in federal grants.

Hays will receive $1.13 million to help pay for a new surface on the airport’s 6,500-foot main runway, airport manager Terry Urban said.

The grants, from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, were announced by U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays.

The 13 Kansas grants totaled $3.77 million.

Hutchinson received about $1.07 million for work on the airport’s taxiway.

The Dodge City Regional Airport received a $157,500 grant to help pay for design and engineering costs for a future taxiway improvement project, airport manager Mike Klein said.

The Hugoton Municipal Airport will receive $39,771 to reposition some runway lights and install new apron lights.

Liberal Municipal Airport received a $360,000 grant to pay for the design and engineering of a future runway rehabilitation project, airport manager Debbie Giske said.

The Stanton County Municipal Airport at Johnson won a $196,635 grant that will help pay for a new airplane parking area, manager Luke Gerard said. The grant also will help pay for an environmental study to review the effect of potentially lengthening the main runway from 4,100 feet to 5,200 feet.
