New law adds penalties for driving under influence

Starting July 1, a new law will permit judges to order a convicted person’s vehicle impounded for up to a year.

The law also will impose fines of $500 to $1,000 for people who permit their cars to be driven by someone they know or should know is drunk.

First offense

  • 48 hours in jail or 100 hours of community service.
  • Drug-alcohol program.
  • Fine of $500 to $1,000.
  • Suspension of driver’s license for 30 days.
  • Starting July 1, impoundment of vehicle for up to year.

Second offense

  • 90 days to one year in jail.
  • Fine of $1,000 to $1,500.
  • One-year suspension of license.
  • Use of ignition interlock , which prevents someone intoxicated from starting vehicle.
  • Starting July 1, impoundment of vehicle for up to year.

Third offense

  • Charge becomes felony.
  • 90 days to one year in jail.
  • Fine of $1,500 to $2,500.
  • One-year suspension of license.
  • Drug-alcohol program.
  • Ignition interlock device.
  • Starting July 1, impoundment of vehicle for up to year.

Fourth offense

  • 90 days to one year in jail.
  • Fine of $2,500.
  • One-year suspension of license; permanent revocation upon fifth offense.
  • Drug-alcohol program.
  • Ignition interlock device.
  • Starting July 1, impoundment of vehicle for up to a year.
