K.C. leaders visit Texas to discuss airline future

? A contingent of Kansas City leaders will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, this week to discuss the future of American Airlines’ overhaul base at Kansas City International Airport.

At stake could be the future of 2,000 jobs at the massive maintenance facility, a city-owned property whose lease with American expires at the end of the year.

Mayor Kay Barnes, City Manager Wayne Cauthen, Aviation Director Russ Widmar and others plan to meet Tuesday in Fort Worth with executives of American, which avoided filing for bankruptcy two months ago when employees agreed to sizable wage cuts.

“We’ve been in ongoing conversations and will continue to do so,” Barnes said.

She said the city wanted to make sure that American kept its maintenance operations at KCI.

In April, American told its work force that without labor concessions, the airline most likely would close its maintenance bases in Kansas City and Fort Worth.
