Topeka Bob Dole is being honored by the National Association of Secretaries of State, thanks to Kansas Secretary Ron Thornburgh.
Thornburgh nominated Dole for the group's Margaret Chase Smith American Democracy Award, named for a Maine senator who in the 1950s criticized fellow Sen. Joseph McCarthy's attacks on suspected Communists.
The association honored Dole for his work in Congress, including his support for the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The group had its annual summer meeting this week in Portland, Maine, and plans to present its award to Dole at its winter meeting in February in Washington.
Last week, the Russell native celebrated his 80th birthday during the opening of the Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University.
