K.C. Police to exhume ‘Precious Doe’ body
Kansas City, Mo. ? The body of a little girl found beheaded in a wooded area of the city more than two years ago will be exhumed today as investigators continue to try to identify her.
After the exhumation, Mary Manhein, a forensic anthropologist and director of the Faces Laboratory Program at Louisiana State University, will take the skull to Louisiana. She hopes to sculpt a more accurate likeness of “Precious Doe.” Police then hope to use the likeness in their continuing effort to find out who the child was and who killed her.
The body will remain at the medical examiner’s office while the work on the skull is being done, Lockhart said. He said no work was planned for now on the body.
The headless body of the child who came to be known as Precious Doe was found on April 28, 2001. Her head, wrapped in a trash bag, was found nearby a few days later.
Police think the girl was 3 to 6 years old when she died. In their effort to identify her, police have released three images to the public: a computer-generated picture, a bust and most recently a sketch.
Police have used DNA tests in the past to try to find a match to at least 10 missing girls since the child’s body was found, but none has matched.
Detectives have followed more than 600 leads from across the country, but no charges have been filed in the case.
Only police and news media will be allowed to view the exhumation, police said.
