The Lawrence Arts Center Preschool needs volunteers to help teachers in classrooms. The school has six classes with about 20 children in each class. The morning session goes from 9:30 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers would help children with projects such as melting crayons, painting, cooking, writing letters, singing and building with blocks. Volunteers would also read to the children.

Scheduling is flexible, but volunteers are asked to choose a specific time to come every week. Volunteers are required to pass a Kansas Bureau of Investigation background check, tuberculosis test, a health check-up and go through training to detect symptoms of neglect, abuse or illness.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Douglas County Senior Services needs SHICK call center volunteers to serve Kansas Medicare beneficiaries. Each Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., SHICK call center volunteers answer questions regarding Medicare-related issues from people who call the hot line. The SHICK hot line is based out of Wichita, but on Thursdays hot line calls are transferred to the Lawrence call center. Volunteers can structure their own schedule for volunteering. People interested in becoming call center volunteers are encouraged to visit the call center on a Thursday and speak with current volunteers. Contact George Kinnard for more information at (785) 842-0543.
  • The Spencer Museum of Art has several volunteer positions open. The museum gift shop needs a sales clerk volunteer who has experience working a cash register. Contact Julianna Curran at 864-0133 or by e-mail at jlcurran@ku.edu. The sales clerk works 2 hours per week or every other week. Museum Docents also are needed to assist with school tours. Interested people should contact the docent program coordinator at 864-0125 or tours@ku.edu. The museum also needs an information desk reception volunteer for a two-hour shift once a month.
