Atty. Gen. offers self for ‘roast’ to raise campaign money

? High-powered lobbyists and corporations are helping sponsor a fund-raiser for Atty. Gen. Phill Kline this week.

Friday’s fund-raiser is being touted as a “roast” of Kline at his home in Topeka “for an evening recounting the fun, follies and foibles of Phill.”

A donation of $25 per family has been suggested to assist Kline in “defraying the expense of the event,” according to an invitation. Kline’s campaign fund is footing the bill.

The event is invitation only.

Kansas House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, and former Atty. Gen. Bob Stephan will be on hand, the invitation said, with Stephan acting as master of ceremonies.

The invitation also lists several corporations and lobbyists, including Sprint, SBC, Ron and Julie Hein, Cox, Kansas Automobile Dealers Assn., Kansas Cable Telecommunications Assn., Pat Hubbell and Associates, General Motors, the Kickapoo Indian Nation of Kansas and Whitney Damron.

Whitney Watson, a spokesman for Kline, said there was nothing wrong with Kline raising funds from entities that may have dealings with the attorney general’s office.

“Who doesn’t have business with the attorney general’s office?” Watson said.

He said he didn’t know how much Kline expected to raise.
