Some campaign donations cause flap in mayoral race

? Some corporate contributors to Carlos Mayans’ campaigns for the Kansas House say they don’t care if he uses the money to run for Wichita mayor next year.

But one of Mayans’ competitors in the mayoral field cares. A hearing on her legal challenge to Mayans’ right to use nearly $72,000 in contributions is scheduled for today in Sedgwick County District Court.

Joan Cole obtained a temporary restraining order Aug. 26. Her lawsuit cites a city ordinance prohibiting political action committees and corporations from contributing to local races.

Though some of Mayans’ money came from PACs and corporations, he was allowed to transfer the funds after an opinion from City Atty. Gary Rebenstorf. Rebenstorf said that state law considered legislative money on hand to be candidate money.

Boeing Co., which made several donations to Mayans, does not want its money returned, even though a recent $300 contribution was made before the company knew of his aspirations to be mayor, said Boeing spokesman Fred Solis.

Koch Industries spokesman Jay Rosser said Mayans was an effective legislator on issues related to Koch but that the fund-transfer dispute should be settled in court.

Mayans, who represented a Wichita district in the House since 1993, said no corporate donor had asked him to return money.

“When someone contributes, they contribute to the candidate,” Mayans said. “They don’t contribute to the office of the candidate. I’m absolutely sure that all these people wanted me to (have) the money.”

At least seven candidates are considering entering the race to succeed Mayor Bob Knight, who is prohibited by law from seeking an eighth term. The primary is next Feb. 25, and the general election is April 1.
