Twenty-nine applicants seek top court spots

? Four Court of Appeals members and 10 district judges are among 29 applicants for two soon-to-be Kansas Supreme Court vacancies.

Justices Tyler Lockett and Fred N. Six, both plan to retire in January, when their current six-year terms end.

The applicants’ names were released Monday by the Supreme Court Nomination Commission, which plans to interview them on Nov. 14-15. The commission will narrow the list for each position to three, then submit those names to Gov. Bill Graves.

Court of Appeals judges who have applied are Robert L. Gernon of Lawrence; Robert J. Lewis Jr. of Topeka; Christel E. Marquardt of Topeka; and G. Joseph Pierron Jr. of Olathe.

District judges seeking a position are Bryce A. Abbott, Sedgwick County; Richard D. Anderson, Shawnee County; Stephen D. Hill, Miami County; Steve A. Leben, Johnson County; Marla J. Luckert, Shawnee County; Thomas E. Malone, Sedgwick County; Kim R. Schroeder, Stevens County; David L. Stutzman, Riley County; Thomas M. Tuggle, Cloud County; and Merlin G. Wheeler, Lyon County.

Also on the list are Jackie N. Williams of Wichita, former U.S. attorney for Kansas, and state Rep. Ward Loyd of Garden City.

Thirteen other attorneys are on the list: G. Gordon Atcheson of Overland Park; Terry E. Beck of Topeka; Timothy R. Brownlee of Shawnee; Richard D. Greene of Wichita; David A. Hanson of Topeka; David R. Hills, of Lake Quivira; Laurence R. Hollis, of Wichita; Keyta D. Kelly of Leavenworth; Glenn I. Kerbs of Dodge City; M. Warren McCamish of Lake Quivira; J. Steven Pigg of Topeka; Jeffrey S. Southard of Lawrence; and H. David Starkey of Colby.
