KC deadly force policy won’t change
Kansas City, Mo ? The city police’s policy on deadly force and training does not need any major revisions, the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners said.
The board had asked for a review of the policy after two fatal shootings by police within four days this month.
After the presentations Tuesday, board president Stacey Daniels-Young said she didn’t hear anything that suggested the board should intervene.
She said the board still planned to review the policy to keep it as current as possible, as it does for all policies.
The specifics of the shootings on Nov. 11 and Nov. 15 that killed Aaron Dougherty, 26, and Deric Mitchell, 21, were not discussed.
Commissioners asked why officers weren’t instructed to shoot suspects in the knees or arms, or to try to shoot weapons out of suspects’ hands, rather than to kill suspects.
“The only time an officer is going to discharge a gun is to protect a life,” said Bill Conroy, a firearms and defensive tactics instructor in the department.
