One KCK liquor store takes advantage of Sunday exemption

? Most local liquor stores didn’t take advantage of a Wyandotte County resolution exempting them from the state’s ban on Sunday liquor sales, alcohol control officials said.

Last week, as the election results were certified, officials with Wyandotte County’s Unified Government said the measure could go into effect immediately, but they counseled prudence and recommended that liquor stores not open.

Several store owners also proved wary, noting that the state and not Kansas City, Kan., issued their licenses.

Merrill Wright’s willingness to take the risk paid off, though. When he arrived to open his store early Sunday afternoon, he said, about 30 customers were waiting in his parking lot.

Lisa Kaspar, a spokeswoman for the state Revenue Department, said she knew of no other stores opening on Sunday. The state took no action, she said.

As of last week, the state was still considering its options, Unified Government spokesman Don Denney said Sunday.

“The state told us on Friday that they were still determining what they were going to do,” he said. “As far as the Unified Government is concerned, based on the vote of the people, we see no problem with opening up.”
