Thornburgh re-elected; Jenkins to be treasurer

? Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh easily won a third term Tuesday, defeating Democratic Sen. David Haley of Kansas City.

With 91 percent of the precincts reporting, the Republican incumbent led 65 percent to 32 percent. Reform Party candidate Charles St.-George had 3 percent.

Republican Sen. Lynn Jenkins was elected treasurer with a 56 percent to 44 percent margin over Democrat Sally Finney. She is the daughter of the late Joan Finney, who was treasurer for 16 years before being elected governor in 1990.

Jenkins’ victory keeps the office in Republican hands. Incumbent Tim Shallenburger was the GOP candidate who lost to Sebelius.

Finney, 44, of Olathe, has spent most of her career as a public health advocate. She is director of the Kansas Public Health Foundation, which represents local health departments.

Jenkins, a 39-year-old Topeka native, won a seat in the Kansas House in 1998 and her Senate seat two years later. She was an accountant for 16 years.

Thornburgh, 39, is the state’s chief elections officer in addition to handling 600 other duties. He was first elected in 1994 and re-elected in 1998.

Haley, 43, is the nephew of “Roots” author Alex Haley and was trying to become only the second Democrat elected secretary of state. St.-George is from Wheaton.
