Ryun re-elected in 2nd

Lykins makes strong showing in Douglas County

Republican Jim Ryun was easily re-elected to the 2nd District Congressional seat Tuesday night, but in Douglas County his Democratic challenger Dan Lykins gave a good account of himself.

No one expected Lykins, 56, Topeka, the Kansas Democratic Party treasurer, to upset the former Kansas University track star and Olympian. But unofficially, with most of the precincts reported in Douglas County he received more than 5,600 votes, or 44 percent.

Ryun, 55, rural Lawrence, gathered 54 percent of the vote with more than 6,800 votes.

Libertarian Art Clack, 53, received more than 200 votes, or about 2 percent.

Congressional districts were redrawn earlier this year, and much of Lawrence west of Iowa Street was taken from the 3rd District and placed in the 2nd District.

In the Wichita area, GOP Rep. Todd Tiahrt fended off a challenge from his 2000 opponent, Democrat Carlos Nolla, in the 4th District.

GOP Rep. Jerry Moran had another easy win, with no major-party opposition in the 1st District of western Kansas, which covers two-thirds of the state.

Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts coasted into a second term with no Democratic opposition.

Roberts, 66, had served 16 years in the U.S. House before winning former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker’s seat in 1996.
