KC officer hit by car

Policeman remains in critical condition

? A man who was trying to elude police lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into a police officer, knocking the officer over a 6-foot fence topped with razor wire.

The officer, whose name was not released, was in critical condition after undergoing surgery Saturday. He suffered extensive head injuries and broken bones, police said.

Jackson County prosecutors said Odell Hampton, 25, of Kansas City, was driving the car.

He was charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, second-degree assault, felony drug trafficking and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

He also was charged with resisting arrest and driving with a revoked license, both misdemeanors. He was being held without bond.

Hampton and a passenger were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition. The passenger had not been charged.

Officers first pursued the car after they saw it in the Kansas City Police Credit Union parking lot about 3:15 a.m. Saturday and learned its license plates did not match the car. Police said Hampton sped away from the officers.

Officers in another car eventually set up stop sticks ahead of the car. But the car lost control before reaching the sticks, smashed into a utility pole and struck the officer.

Hampton, who was armed with a handgun, had to be cut out of the vehicle, police said. They also reported finding drugs in the car.
