Kansans in Congress report campaign fund-raising success

? Republican Sen. Pat Roberts was the only Kansas congressional candidate to out-raise Democratic Rep. Dennis Moore over the past three months, according to reports released this week.

Moore represents Kansas City, Kan., and its suburbs, and has set money-raising records in his three campaigns for Congress. He had raised at least $1.08 million as of June 30, the close of the Federal Election Commission’s three-month reporting period.

Roberts faces little opposition to his bid for a second term a Republican, Tom Oyler, who doesn’t intend to raise much money or even to win, and Libertarians Steven A. Rosile and George Cook. Roberts has raised $1.56 million.

But Moore faces a competitive general election once a Republican nominee is chosen in the Aug. 6 primary election. In cash on hand, the key figure in campaign money-raising, Moore has a significant advantage over both Republicans.

Moore reported $812,579 cash on hand, while Republican Jeff Colyer reported $307,723 cash on hand and Republican Adam Taff reported $207,716 cash on hand.

In Wichita’s congressional contest, four-term GOP Rep. Todd Tiahrt reported $586,191 cash on hand and overall contributions of $574,019 in this election cycle. Attorney Carlos Nolla, a Democrat who ran against Tiahrt in 2000, reported $171,017 cash on hand with total contributions of $285,732 for the cycle.

Nolla has a primary opponent in Democrat Patrick Quaney, but Quaney’s report was not yet on file at the FEC.

Other than in the Kansas City-area 3rd District and Wichita’s 4th District, few reports from would-be challengers had been received by the FEC. Reform candidate Dawn Bly of Overland Park reported $84.25 cash on hand and total contributions of $1,950.

Reports on file also show that in the 1st District of western Kansas three-term GOP Rep. Jerry Moran had cash on hand of $692,104, with total contributions of $289,385.

And in the eastern Kansas 2nd District, three-term Republican Rep. Jim Ryun had $334,649 cash on hand and contributions of $292,020.

Their cash balances are larger than their total contributions because they had money left over from their 2000 campaigns.
