Area races primed for GOP primaries

Commission seats in Jefferson, Franklin counties are contested

Republicans will be facing off in primaries Aug. 6 for a shot at winning seats on county commissions in Jefferson and Franklin counties.

In Leavenworth County, the lone Republican and Democrat candidates for one open seat will meet in the Nov. 5 general election.

Monday is the registration deadline for residents seeking to vote in the Aug. 6 primaries. Advance voting varies by county, but most simply are waiting for the paperwork to get started.

“We’re still waiting on our ballots,” said Lucy Patterson, who handles elections in Franklin County. “We hope that’s by the end of the week. We’re all ready, except for the ballots.”

Here’s a list of candidates in the area counties’ primary elections:

Franklin County

Three of the Franklin County Commission’s five seats are up for election; each commissioner serves a four-year term and receives a salary of $14,115.

In the 1st District, only incumbent Donald Waymire, a Republican, is running. The district covers much of northern Ottawa, including downtown.

In the 4th District, which covers much of southern Ottawa, including Ottawa University, there are three Republicans seeking the nomination for the seat now occupied by Raymond Carey, who is not seeking re-election. The contenders are Max Attebury, Milton Farris and Donald C. Hay.

In the 5th District, which covers eastern Franklin County, including the cities of Wellsville, Rantoul and Lane, two Republicans are seeking their party’s nomination. They are Jerry Harnden and Donald Stottlemire. Chester Leach is the lone Democrat seeking the seat.

Elections officials intend to start mailing advance ballots today and start advance voting Thursday at the county courthouse, 315 Main St. Advance voting hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays until Aug. 5, when advance voting stops at noon.

Jefferson County

One of the Jefferson County Commission’s three seats is up for election; the winner of the general election will serve a four-year term and earn a salary of $14,420.

Three Republicans are vying for the party’s nomination in the 1st District, which covers Oskaloosa, McLouth and three townships in southeastern Jefferson County. They are:

Lynn Luck of Oskaloosa. She runs the Jefferson County Service Organization, which provides social services, particularly for elderly residents.

George Mathews of McLouth. The incumbent commissioner is a retired state worker.

G.W. George Meyer of Oskaloosa, who is self-employed.

Only one Democrat filed as a candidate: Glen Phillips of Perry. He’s retired from the Perry-Lecompton school district.

Election officials hope to begin advance voting Monday at the county courthouse in Oskaloosa. The clerk’s office is open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays; the clerk’s office will close advance voting at noon Aug. 5.

Leavenworth County

One of three Leavenworth County Commission seats is up for election; the winning commissioner will serve a four-year term and receive a salary of $40,000.

The contested seat represents the 1st District, which covers northern Leavenworth County and portions of the city of Leavenworth.

Poised to face off in the general election are incumbent Donald Navinsky, a Democrat, of Easton; and James C. “J.C.” Tellefson, a Republican, of Leavenworth.

Advance voting begins July 24 at the county courthouse, 300 Walnut St. in Leavenworth. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Advance voting will close at noon Aug. 5.
