Legislator relates own abuse tale

— Rep. Mary Pilcher Cook, R-Shawnee, voiced support Wednesday for proposals aimed at curbing domestic violence, saying that if the initiatives had been in effect during the 1980s she may have escaped being a victim of abuse.

"It would have given me a lot more confidence" had she known she could have taken measures against her ex-husband, Cook said.

The measures would allow people in dating relationships to seek protection with abuse orders, stalking victims to obtain restraining orders and specially trained nurses to collect evidence of sexual abuse crimes.

Cook attended the news conference as an observer and later said she supported the bills.

She said the package "sends a definite message that abusive men need to hear."
