Blood-taking pharmacist gets license back

? A pharmacist who drew blood from dozens of people for a bogus study was cleared to practice again by the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy on Thursday.

Corey Penner had surrendered his license after being convicted in March of 16 counts of misdemeanor battery. He was given two years’ probation.

The renewal of his license comes with several conditions: He is not to practice as a pharmacist in charge and is not allowed to do any medical work other than dispensing medicine.

Prosecutors said Penner had drawn about 200 blood samples during a span of about seven years, dating back to his time as a student at Kansas University. He at first mailed the blood to nonexistent addresses in the Kansas City area, then simply threw the blood away.

Penner never explained why he collected the blood. But Harvey County Atty. Matt Treaster has said the crimes resulted from “a sort of arm fetish.”
