Ex-mortgage writer gets probation for fraud

? The former president of a Great Bend mortgage company has been sentenced to three years probation for falsifying documents at the business she co-owned.

Lorraine Law, 48, of Great Bend also was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $7,762.75 in restitution to U.S. Housing and Urban Development.

Law pleaded guilty Oct. 3 to one count of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud for falsifying documents from 1998 through 1999. Law resigned from Community Home Mortgage Inc. Jan. 28, 1999, the same day that Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents raided her home and office to seize records.

Law left the courtroom Monday morning, minutes after her sentencing, with her husband, Barton County Community College President Veldon Law. She declined to comment on the case.

Her attorney, Kurt Kerns, said his client was pleased with the sentence.

“She’s glad she can finally put this matter behind her,” Kerns said. “We’re very thankful that the court saw fit to give Lorraine the lightest sentence allowed under the federal sentencing guidelines.”

Kerns said the restitution of almost $8,000 to HUD stemmed from a case in which Law was not charged, where a client later defaulted on a loan.
