Child porn conviction yields 41-month sentence

? A Blue Springs man was sentenced Tuesday to 41 months in prison for possession of child pornography and attempted sexual activity with a minor, U.S. Atty. Todd Graves said.

Robert L. Smith, 57, who pleaded guilty in August, was sentenced in federal court for one count of possession of child pornography and one count of traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in a sexual act with a minor.

According to Graves, Detective Shawn Bostick of the Wichita Police Department was acting in an undercover role on the Internet, identifying himself as a 14-year-old girl named Jana. Smith admitted that he told “Jana” he wanted to travel to Wichita to meet her and invited her to stay in a hotel room with him. Smith was arrested Dec. 31, 2001, at a shopping center in Wichita where he had arranged to meet “Jana,” Graves said.
