Slain missionary’s wife makes thank-you video

? The wife of Martin Burnham, the American missionary killed during an attempt to free him from more than a year of captivity at the hands of Muslim rebels in the Philippines, has released a short video to thank supporters.

Gracia Burnham, who was held captive with her husband, released the video through a publishing company. It offers the first glimpse of the life she is now leading in Rose Hill, Kan., where she lives with her three children.

“I just would like everyone to know that’s watching this video, I want you to know that I send my thanks,” Burnham says. “I feel like it was your prayers that got me home. I think it’s a miracle that I am home.”

The Burnhams were kidnapped from a Filipino resort where they were celebrating their wedding anniversary in May 2001. They had been living in the Philippines since 1996, moving there as members of the Sanford-based New Tribes Mission.

Martin Burnham was the sixth New Tribes missionary to be killed in the last 20 years. He and his wife were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim terrorist group with links to al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

Gracia Burnham was released by her captors after being shot in the leg during the June 7 rescue attempt in which her husband was killed.

“My daughter asked if I was going to have a nervous breakdown because everyone is expecting one,” Gracia Burnham says in the video. “And I told her I had my nervous breakdown in the jungle. There were down days, depression days, and I’m out now and I can’t be sad. I’m going to live life to its fullest and I’m going to enjoy every day.”

The video was released by Tyndale House Publishers, the company which plans next year to distribute a book authored by Gracia Burnham in which the ordeal will be detailed.
