The Kansas River rushes over the dam near downtown Lawrence, Thursday afternoon, May 9, 2019.

The Kansas River at Lawrence continued to rise Thursday and was expected to crest by midnight, the National Weather Service said.

Brandon Drake, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said that the Kansas River was rising slightly faster than previously forecasted. However, it was still at minor flood stage at 19 feet early Thursday afternoon, below the moderate flooding stage of 20 feet. The most recent data showed the river should begin to drop after midnight Friday, Drake said.
