Letter to the editor: Don’t wait until election to defend democracy
To the editor:
Warning! Our country is in a critical situation! Our president and powerful groups backing him are working fast to take away our constitutional and inalienable rights, making it harder for us to vote. They’re seeking to take away birthright citizenship, gerrymandering our neighborhoods, restricting states’ rights to conduct their own elections, telling women what they can and cannot do, taking away rights to abortions. Some people live in fear of deportation and some fear they will need to prove their citizenship.
Our president is weakening our voices and our legislators are letting him get away with it. We can’t let the president and his billionaire backers chip away at our democracy. The more they get, the more they want. If it continues, the U.S.A. will soon be a dictatorship! The Aug. 4 and Nov. 3 elections are a turning point for our democracy. And right now — May through October — we can and must raise our voices together and demand our legislators hold President Trump accountable. Don’t wait until August or November. It takes all of us making phone calls, emailing our legislators, attending candidate forums and rallies. Stand up for democracy and your voice will be heard. Then your vote on Aug. 4 and Nov. 3 will be your voice. By setting an example of registering to vote and voting you will be helping your family, friends and neighbors raise their voices and be heard as well. It takes all of us, but we can be heard. Resistance works! Are you in?
Charley Crabtree,
Lawrence
